Judged Cover (A Rare Breed Indeed)
(A Rare Breed Indeed)
A couple weeks ago I took the time to read two promotional posters for artists who would be playing here at WSP-MSU , WHEY JENNINGS (06/01/2025) and RARE OF BREED (05/29/2025). In the spirit of transparency, I wish I could say that the editorials left me excited and expectant. In my mind, what I read seemed like another Christian time lapse testimonial and both posters almost read the same. Since I am leaving in a week, I resigned myself to help set up and tear down the stage. So, I could build my hygiene before this next phase begins. It only made sense to sit through the show! What I saw can only be described as inspiring. I don't know the numbers, I didn't count. We will use a safe estimation. Imagine eighty people of varying theological beliefs! White boys, with affiliate tattoos. Natives, with cultural tattoos on their face, sleeved in. Blacks, with kufis. Gangsters, API, etc. All either standing directly in front of the stage or around the yard. Before the show, the artists are shaking hands, actively engaging the inmate population. After the show, they spoke to and prayed with us individually for what seemed 30-45 minutes. Signing autographs on sweaty hats, promotional posters, and water bottles. Have you ever been to a church or Christian concert where someone is shoving their righteousness so far down your throat it gags you and physically makes you sick? You know their life or their walk cannot possibly be that perfect. So you begin to do one of three things. 1.Question, what they are hiding. 2.Question, what you are doing wrong in your walk, while wondering how you may reach their esteem. 3.Question, your religion as you begin seeking something less strenuous. Well, this wasn't that! The overriding and underlying message, this day, was you are loved, you are worthy of love, and we love you. They met us where we were at and didn't ask for more. I wish I could speak to the spirit of rapture, but, the experience is ours. Some things don't need to be explained. It was explained to me that these men were building their name and extending their brand. I would argue that these men are secure in their craft, and if they are to be attributed with the construction of anything. It would be another successful addition to this ever growing Christian phenomena or movement where the broken are mended, their art becomes the true reflection of their souls, and their lives reflect their walk. As they stated, It is about relationship, not religion. It is not a competition, but God bless and God speed Whey Jennings. I believe that this may be hard to follow up. 1NF@MOUS! May 30, 2025
